Chapter 13
Keegan propped Bitsy up against the house and tried the back door. It was locked. Scrubbing the window clean with his sleeve, he peeked inside, looking for signs of an alarm system. When he didnât see a control panel anywhere, he took off his shirt, wrapped it around his fist, and smashed the decorative glass. Squeezing his arm through the opening, he unlocked the door and assisted Bitsy inside.
After he shook the glass out of his shirt, he put it back on and did a quick sweep of the place. The house was small and quaint, with a surprisingly large kitchen, two bedrooms and two baths, and a small fireplace in the living room. It also looked like it was brand new, or maybe between owners. Every room was freshly painted that light beige color common to the area, but there was no furniture, no personal items. Only bare floors and countertops, all wiped clean.
There was, however, a toolbox in the garage. Perhaps left by a handyman who was doing some work on the place. Inside, Keegan found what he needed to get the iron cuff off Bitsyâs ankle.
When he got back to the kitchen, she was sitting on the floor tiles, shivering.
Keegan made quick work of the cuff and chucked it out the back door. He even managed to get it off without injuring her further. Dried blood coated her torn skin from her efforts to escape, and he tried to wipe it off with a clean rag heâd found in the toolbox. When that didnât work, he tried the faucet, and was surprised to find both hot and cold running water.
He wet the rag with warm water, cleaned her ankle, and wet it again with cool water. This time, he placed it over the burns on her face.
She hadnât uttered a sound while he messed with her foot, but now Bitsy hissed in pain.
âIâm sorry,â he told her sincerely.
Her eyes, one still swollen, shot to his face.
âIâm sorry,â he told her again, and he realized he wasnât talking about her burns anymore. His vision blurred, and he blinked hard a few times. âIâm so sorry, Bitsy. I have no excuse for what I did. For what I allowed to happen. And I canât expect you to ever forget what I allowed to happen to you and your family.â
She tugged on his arm until he removed the rag from her face. He was glad to see she was already healing, though he could tell there were still lingering effects from the iron. It would take a while for the effects to wear off completely.
âIâll never forgive you, Keegan.â The words were spoken softly and without malice, but they rang with honesty. âI canât.â
Ah. The female knew how to gut him wide open better than anyone heâd ever known. She truly did. He brushed the uninjured side of her face with the back of his knuckles. Her skin was soft and supple, with only a light scattering of freckles to mar the perfection.
